Right, standing desks have many significant benefits over traditional seated versions. One study found that there was an improvement in heart rate variability with no reduction in cognitive performance for every hour spent on a standing desk.
When we are actively standing, walking, or otherwise moving, our bodies are in a state of dynamic equilibrium. The human body is designed to be active and move in a very fluid and fluidly changing environment.
In fact, it’s been said that moving is the original condition of life. If we take breaks throughout the day, even if they’re short, we allow our bodies to shift into this natural state of activation. This helps us stay healthy whether we’re standing or sitting.
Here are our top 5 benefits our team has narrowed down to talk about with you today:
• It will help you burn more calories throughout the day.
• Being active will automatically decrease your blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol levels.
• You can lower your obesity rate.
• Standing makes you become more active and improve your posture.
• Standing will give you a natural energy boost, increase alertness and productivity.
5 Health Benefits of A Standing Desk
A standing desk will help you burn more calories throughout the day.
You’ve probably heard it said before that sitting is the new smoking. In fact, 10-15% of an average person’s daily caloric expenditure is lost when they sit all day long. While standing at an adjustable standing desk won’t replace your exercise program, it can help you burn 200-300 extra calories per day while while at work. The important thing is to make it a habit of standing and moving throughout your day.
Being active will automatically decrease your blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol levels.
A sedentary lifestyle will raise your resting heart rate from 60 beats/minute to 80 beats/minute. The high blood pressure induced by these increases can lead to some negative efffects such as:
- strokes
- heart attacks
- kidney damage
- premature aging
- and many other severe conditions
And let’s face it, at the time of this writing, national and worldwide statistics show that the numbers for the first two categories aren’t going down as quickly as they should. We MUST do our part to take care of our bodily needs.
Although you may include one of these desks into your lifestyle, remeber that it is not a replacement for your regular workout routine. As you are probably aware, exercise is essential for maintaining good health and reducing the risks of many diseases, including high cholesterol, heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis.
So don’t be afraid to stand up! You’ll feel better about yourself and save money too by avoiding unnecessary medical bills.
As you increase your activity level with a standing desk, your risk for developing one of the above conditions will naturally decrease as well. This is because being active increases your body’s circulating blood volume and promotes increased cardiac output. This, in turn, increases the efficiency of the heart’s pumping action and decreases the strain on the cardiovascular system in general.
You can lower your obesity rate.
It’s been proven that obesity is directly proportional to sitting and watching TV. As a result of the sedentary lifestyle, most Americans are at an increased risk of developing abdominal obesity and carrying extra fat around their waistline and lower back.
When you spend most of your time sitting at a computer or working out by yourself, you are likely to pack on unnecessary pounds. Getting in shape through regular exercise is necessary. If you have been carrying around some excess pounds that you can’t seem to get rid of, then standing desks might be the answer you’ve been looking for.
Unlike exercising alone, standing still all day will force your metabolism into high gear, which will allow you to burn fat faster than ever before, without even trying!
Standing makes you become more active and improve your posture.
There seems to be a real connection between being active, standing, and leaning back as opposed to reclining on a couch. Research finds that when you’re sitting down for extended periods, you can actually struggle to activate the muscles in your back.
This becomes especially problematic because fat is stored in your buttocks and lower back area as a result of being inactive all day long. Studies show that workers who use standing desks are able to improve their posture by up to 10%.
When you’re standing and leaning slightly backward, you’ll use your lower back muscles. This becomes very important when you are at work because you’ll be able to sit straighter and achieve better posture. That means fewer headaches, sore neck muscles, shoulder aches, and upper back pains.
Standing will give you a natural energy boost, increase alertness and productivity.
More than one study has found that people who have a standing desk experience:
- improved circulation throughout the body
- an increase in energy levels
- increased alertness and productivity throughout the day
It’s been said that one of the best times to take a nap is between 1-3 pm. These are the hours where you might be low on energy.
Standing at your standing desk in the middle of the day can give you that midday energy boost without consuming caffeine or other harmful stimulants.
Standing desks also relieve stress. They can prevent anxiety and depression because they increase energy levels and give us time away from the demands placed upon us.
The top five benefits of using an adjustable standing desks are just the beginning of what standing all day can do for your health and wellness levels. Personally, I believe that a standing desk is very important to reach your personal, professional, and physical goals.
The benefits of standing desks can go beyond just productivity and are essential for improving many of the ailments we want to avoid in our lives. It’s vital that you research standing desks on your own because there are so many different options in the market these days.

Wow! I knew that I needed to do something to help my back and sciatic pain from sitting all day but I didn’t realize that standing could also help to relieve stress and increase productivity.
But I guess it makes sense that it would help keep you more alert and give an energy boost. It’s nice to be able to break up the day between sitting and standing.
Usually, I just get up from my desk and take a break or get a snack or do some stretching to relieve pain. But if I just stand up instead I wouldn’t have that extra pain distraction getting in the way.
I need one of these!

I had no idea standing could bring so many benefits, that is so interesting to me. I usually spend my days working on projects on my laptop (on a standard desk), but this is giving me thoughts that maybe I should convert to a standing desk.
I have an apple watch that tracks my calories (it basically tells on me) and I almost never am able to fill it with my sitting addiction, so that extra 200-300 calories burned from the desk could help jump start me!

Since I work a lot with my computer, I have back and neck pain. It’s terrible because it limits you from doing other activities.
Now that I read The Health Benefits of the Standing Desks, I will definitely buy one for myself.
I do have a question, though. I also have knee problems. Will standing all day cause more damage to my knees?
Thank you so much for this excellent post
